Overview
The Government of India has launched the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card, a significant digital initiative by the Ministry of Home Affairs aimed at modernising OCI services. The new system enables applicants to complete the entire OCI process online—from application submission and document upload to approval and downloading a digitally generated OCI card.
Existing OCI cardholders can also generate and download their digital e-OCI Card through the OCI Services Portal in most cases without submitting a fresh application or undergoing physical verification. The existing physical OCI booklet will continue to remain valid.
Background
The e-OCI initiative is part of the Government of India’s broader digital governance programme to improve service delivery, enhance security, and streamline immigration processes.
The new platform offers a fully digital application and document management process while integrating with immigration systems for real-time verification at airports and Immigration Check Posts. The initiative is intended to improve convenience for OCI cardholders while reducing administrative processing and paper-based documentation.
Impact
The introduction of the e-OCI system brings several important changes:
Digital OCI Card: OCI cardholders can now download and store their e-OCI Card on a mobile device and present the digital version to airlines and Immigration Check Posts.
Physical OCI booklet remains valid: Existing physical OCI cards continue to be accepted and do not need to be replaced.
No OCI booklet re-issuance after age 20: OCI cardholders are no longer required to obtain a new OCI booklet after receiving a new passport once they are over 20 years of age.
Mandatory passport updates: Whenever an OCI cardholder is issued a new passport, the passport details must be updated online through the OCI Services Portal within three months of passport issuance. This requirement applies to all OCI cardholders.
Removal of six-month residence requirement: Eligible foreign nationals are no longer required to complete six months of residence in India before submitting an OCI Card application.
These measures are expected to simplify OCI administration, improve user convenience, strengthen identity verification, and facilitate faster immigration processing.
Date of implementation
The e-OCI Card system and the associated OCI policy changes are effective immediately following their official launch by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

- Continue carrying or retaining their existing physical OCI booklet, which remains valid.
- Ensure passport details are updated on the OCI portal within three months whenever a new passport is issued.
